Stingray banquet went swimmingly

The Stingray Swim Club held its
annual banquet at Ristorante Pappagallo and was honoured to have the Governor
Duncan Tayler and his wife as the Guests of Honour. The Governor is a keen swimmer
and revealed that he is a Cambridge Blue in water polo.

Adam Roberts of the Stingrays
publicity officer. He said: “The club takes this opportunity to recognise the
achievements of the swimmers, to thank the coaches who work so tirelessly
through the year, to thank Ann-Marie who cleans up after the swimmers and
collects the abundant lost items and to thank the sponsors who help keep the
club and its wholesome efforts afloat.”

An plane hitch stranded SSC
president Brenda McGrath in Chicago, so vice-president Amanda Roberts had to
step up and host the event and make the president’s speech. But this was not a
day for speeches, but rather for enjoying the excellent food and service, for
celebrating the achievements of the swimmers and for enjoying each others’
company.

Each swimmer in the club received a
participation certificate on which is recorded the swimming milestones of the
year. Then the coaches announced the recipients of their awards. Each group has
a most improved and a spirit award, the latter being given to a swimmer who is
committed to attending practices and meets, has a positive attitude and is
inspirational and motivational towards the other athletes.

There is also a special coaches’
award to recognise someone who stands out above the others in a combined number
of different areas. That may include: outstanding performances, dedication,
commitment, spirit, attendance, effort and general ‘coachability’.

Most Improved Swimmer was Geoffrey
Butler. The main prize – the Coaches’ Award – went to Bethany Cleaver, who has
returned from serious injury to make her first CARIFTA team this year.

Roberts added: “A new feature this
year was the handing out of door prizes and the club would like thank those who
donated gifts – The Baby Shoppe, Focus Hair & Beauty, the Jacques Scott
Group, Sterling And Stone, Michael Weber from CISC and Casanova Restaurant. The
Stingray Swim Club wishes to thank its sponsors Caledonian Bank, Consolidated
Water, KPMG and Cayman National Bank.”
