Veterans visit primary school

In advance of Remembrance Day
(today, 15 November), war veterans Dale Banks and Ebert Ebanks recently visited
students and teachers at John A. Cumber Primary School in Savannah.

Mr. Banks explained the
significance of the poppies — the flowers worn for remembrance — and then
read the poem In Flanders Field by John McCrae.

“On the eleventh hour of the
eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the First World War ended, hence
the reason for selecting this day to be recognised as Veterans Day,” he said.

Mr. Banks spoke with students about
his experiences while serving with the American and British armed forces.

He told the students about the
importance of remembering those people who had given their lives for peace and
freedom during the various wars.

The students seemed
to enjoy the visit and were appreciative of the war veterans sharing their
knowledge and experiences, school officials said.
