Eight arrested in deadly Shanghai blaze

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (UPI) — Police in Shanghai arrested eight people Tuesday in a
high-rise apartment building fire that killed 53 people and injured more than
70 others, officials said.

Renliang, chief of Jingan District government, said an initial investigation
into Monday’s blaze indicated unlicensed welders were to blame, China’s
state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Some welders were among those detained.

The blaze
broke out on the 10th floor of the 28-story building, Chen Fei, director of the
city’s fire-fighting bureau, said. The building was being renovated when the
fire started.
