Slight shift in enrolment, public school grads in 2010

Figures released for public schools

Figures for the 2009-2010 school year released last week show a roughly 1 per cent decrease in the number of public school graduates in 2010 compared to 2009.

A total of 315 high school students graduated in May 2010, compared to 319 graduates in 2009. In 2000, there were 240 graduates from Cayman public schools.

Total enrolment was up about 1 per cent, with 4,812 students in public primary and secondary schools for the 2009-2010 school year, compared to 4,748 students in 2008-2009.

Enrolment in primary schools was 2,456 students in 2009-2010, compared to 2,431 in 2008-2009, a 1 per cent increase.

In public secondary schools, 2,356 students were enrolled in 2009-2010, 
compared to the previous year’s total of 2,317, a 1 per cent increase.

Primary schools, 2009-2010

Kindergarten: 59 reception (or kindergarten level) students, compared to 39 a year earlier; a 51 per cent increase.

Year 1: 389 students in Grand Cayman and Little Cayman primary schools, compared to 363 in 2008-2009; a 7 per cent increase.

Year 2: 363 students, compared to 382; a 5 per cent decrease.

Year 3: 380 students, compared to 423; a 10 per cent decrease.

Year 4: 431 students, compared to 422; a 2 per cent increase.

Year 5: 435 students, compared to 404; an increase of about 8 per cent.

Year 6: 399 students, compared to 398 a year earlier.

John A. Cumber Primary School had the highest 
enrolment, with 513 students, followed by Prospect 
Primary with 413.

Secondary schools

Year 7: 397 students, compared to 408; a 3 per cent decrease.

Year 8: 403 students, compared to 394; a 2 per cent increase.

Year 9: 411 students, compared to 369; an increase of about 11 per cent.

Year 10: 383 students, compared to 386 Year 10 students in 2008-2009.

Year 11: 375 students, compared to 390; a 4 per cent decrease.

Year 12: 383 students, compared to 370; a 5 per cent increase.

John Gray High School had the highest enrolment, with 1,009 students.
