The Cayman Islands joins many other countries for Vaccination Week in the Americas from 23 to 30 April.
Cayman and countries in the Americas will celebrate under the theme Vaccinate your family – protect your community.
The effort is meant to strengthen immunisation programmes and improve vaccination coverage rates in the participating countries.
Since its inception in 2003, more than 323 million individuals of all ages have been vaccinated as a result of the initiative.
“Here in the Cayman Islands, we are fortunate to have an excellent Public Health Department with dedicated staff to implement robust and up-to-date vaccination schedules,” Mark Scotland, minister of Health, Environment, Youth, Sports and Culture, said in a statement. “Officials follow the Pan American Health Organisation’s Expanded Programme of Immunisation guidelines in scheduling local immunisation campaigns and run a relevant and modern vaccination programme.
The vaccines are free.
He said that over the past few decades, vaccines have played a pivotal role in raising the quality of life for millions of people.
“Immunisation programmes have prevented potentially devastating childhood diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, tuberculosis and polio.”
He added that this year the Caribbean celebrates its 20th year without an indigenous case of the measles and its eighth year without an indigenous case of rubella.
“Nevertheless, we must not become complacent,” said Health Services Authority Immunisation Programme Manager Alice Jane Ebanks. “Despite such successes in immunisation, some children still do not complete their vaccination schedules, leaving them vulnerable.
The immunisation schedule recommends that, by the age of 15 months, infants should have received their early immunisations.
