Exam shows visitor died of crash injuries

A post mortem has confirmed that a 64-year-old female
visitor to Cayman died of injuries sustained in a crash of a car her husband
was driving.

The day after the woman died, police arrested her
64-year-old husband at the Own Roberts International Airport on suspicion of
causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in Cayman on police bail.

The crash happened on Jubilee Lane, off Batabano Road, West
Bay, around 9.45pm on Tuesday, 10 May, when the couple from Ohio and a 58-year
old male backseat passenger were travelling in a Suzuki Liana that collided
with a black Chevrolet Colorado.

The driver and male passenger in the Suzuki sustained minor
injuries and the 23-year-old local driver of the Chevrolet was not injured.

The woman was taken to hospital complaining of head and back
pain and died almost a week later on Monday, 16 May.

“A post-mortem examination took place on Wednesday, 18
May… The examination confirmed that the cause of death was impact injuries
connected to the collision,” a police spokesperson said.

She added: “The RCIPS is in regular contact with him to
update him on the progress of the investigation. He is being supported by a
family member and the US Consulate.

“In addition, RCIPS officers will continue to provide
support to him and his bereaved family during this difficult, and sensitive,
time.”

Police have
not revealed the circumstances of the collision that led to the arrest of the
man.
