A pair of would-be robbers couldn’t figure out how to open the door at the Cayman National Bank branch in Savannah Tuesday afternoon and took off without entering the establishment, according to police.
Witnesses on the scene said two suspects, armed with what appeared to be handguns, showed up at the front entrance of the CNB at Countryside Shopping Centre just after noon.
Police said the men attempted to enter a door at the bank, found it locked and then fled without entering. The door is operated by a card-swipe system and cannot be opened without a bank card.
Royal Cayman Islands Police Officers were searching random vehicles in the area shortly after the robbery occurred. Witnesses said the two would-be robbers came from behind the bank to attempt their entry.
No shots were fired in the incident and no one was hurt.

Well there’s your problem!
We dont’ need extra police officers. We just need to equip each bank with these kind of doors.
Voila…problem solved.
Very Clever!
Berd … and equip the gas stations, mom and pop shops, the bathrooms at public beach, etc, etc …
But let’s hear it for criminal ignorance! Obviously not much planning went into this attempt.
It seems that most of these criminals are either coming from or leaving by way of behind the bank. Maybe the banks should consider adding outdoor security cameras and guards behind the building. Rooftop water balloon sling shots may also be a good preventative measure.
Grand Cayman-Home of the world’s dumbest criminals.

Sorry, can’t agree…problem only partially solved.
Until The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service’s armed police units catch, confront and shoot a few of these gun-toting cowboys, either dead or seriously wounded. these gun-toting criminals now rule the streets of Grand Cayman.
Any other police force in the democratic world would have done this by now.
If this is not done, the Cayman Islands can kiss its tourism industry goodbye…
Why should visitors feel safe in visiting a country from their home countries in North America and Europe where their police do not tolerate armed criminals running amock in their societies.
Only Cayman’s population seem willing to put up with this threat to their entire community…
And in the process, have their police being made to look like the fools that they are proving to be.
Says something about the general level of criminals’ intelligence; and perhaps also something about the standard of education where they were raised?
Okay so 3 times I have read the paper this week and 3 times there is a report of armed robbery, hello, really, this isn’t some kind of joke!
Per capita crime rates this week would probably make Grand Cayman rank in the top ten of crime capitals.
Dumb crime or otherwise I feel badly for the business’s, institutions, pensioners, retirees and general citizens that make their living on the continued success of Grand Cayman’s popularity.
Question is when will someone with authority and guts accept responsibility for counter-crime enforcement and get up and do something about it.
Where are the crime busters?
Why is there so much apathy?
Ironically, the main attraction to paradise is peace and tranquility, hopefully the phrase you fools, you had it made won’t echo in the silence and desperation.
Perhaps the criminals will obligingly use their own debit card to get in next time thereby enabling their identity to be known….
Not dumb at all. To have operated the swipe entry they would need a CNB card. And trackable evidence would have been left.
This is therefore one easy way to keep bamks safe.
Also, every bank now had a security guard by the door. Just keep the door locked unless the customer uses a swipe card or presses a buzzer.
If the customer is wearing a mask, the guard doesn’t ler them in.
Of course this would only stop bank robberies.
It is impractical to do this everywhere. Nor can one have a police officer everywhere.
What is needed is sophisticated follow up of evidence left. How did the robber get there? Who saw them? How did they get away? What were they wearing? E ven a drop of sweat can give DNA evidence.
We need CSI Cayman.
I agree completely with Firey, The RCIPS has lost control or the Crime in Cayman which is just about an everyday thing. The crooks obviously have no fear of the law, after all what will they do hit them with their flashlight…And if they get caught the courts will be more concerned about the crooks welfare then the public’s.
Grand Cayman is definitely the place to go for Robbers Muggers and Thieves Oh My. And the word is spreading, soon the Cartels will be there to setup shop.
It’s like taking Candy from a Baby..
Great S T A R T, but the job is only half done. They need a double door entryway. First door opens without card, second door needs card. THEN, most important, they need to swipe a card to get out of the first door!
Works every time.

Dear Long term resident The problem seems to be that the glass in banks may not be strong enough to stop a bullet so a security guard inside would be foolish to refuse entry if a gun is pointed at him from outside. Although not ideal a system of inter-linked CCTV cameras is needed so that the perps can be tracked from arrival to departure. Would it be impossibe to have police car choke points established so that it would be impossible for the perps to escape by car without going through a police control point. Investment in vehicle disablng gear would also seem to be worthwhile as this can shred tyres or stop engines dead at a not unreasonable cost. It seems to me from the descriptions that we are dealing with a small gang of criminal twerps so they need to be apprehended and put away for a long time. It would be a sad day but banks also need to install cashier screens which drop down and foil any robbery by denyig access to the money under circumstances where the staff cannot unlock or do anything so the robbers have to leave empty handed.
Hard times need hard solutions so maybe a militia needs to be raised to protect the righteous citizens’ stuff.
Possibly a sign of how blase these characters are becoming. Obviously did their homework before executing that well-planned scheme.
