Some of Cayman’s best youth hockey players are facing foreign opposition.
The Cayman Islands Kings travel team will be venturing to Ft. Myers, Florida 17-19 June to participate in the Sunshine State Games. The C.I. Kings, part of the umbrella School of Fitness programme, will be represented with two teams of 17 players from the Logic Youth Roller Hockey League.
Representing Cayman are players Alex Agemian, Andrew Antonysraj, Tynan Klein, Ben Williams, Alex Wilkins, Ethan Hersant, Graeme Hill, Mack Moser, Jacob Walters, Nicole Whittaker, Ryan Lloyd, Jamie Williams, Danny Link, Hunter Wilkom, Matthew Wilkins, Joshua McCartney, Alex Jones, Gari Sanfilippo (USA), coach Ray Singh and team organizer Colleen Stoetzel-Singh. Unable to travel on the trip are player Matt Somerville and Coach Jean-Louis Beaudet.
The youth league wrapped recently with the Appleby Sharks (PeeWee), WestStar Wild (Atom) and XN Financial Flames (Novice) being named division champions. WestStar arguably made the biggest statement by upsetting favourites the Eats Blazers 5-2.
WestStar head coach Chris Wilson stated: “Solid goal-tending and defence kept the Blazers at bay but our forward lines really meshed and played an outstanding game. I’m extremely proud of all the kids. They worked hard all year and are deserving of their gold medals.
“When the trophy, a Stanley Cup look-a-like, was brought out a number of the kids asked when they could get it. Its tradition for the Stanley Cup to be circulated amongst the players during the off season. I thought I was done coaching, turns out I’m going to be chauffeuring the trophy around all summer.”
