Kings Sports Centre has seen no shortage of hockey drama.
Arguably some of the most exciting hockey came during the Logic Youth Roller Hockey League PeeWee division final.
Appleby dominated the Peewee division, leading the league in most goals for and least goals against. After defeating the Stuart Panthers in the semi-finals, the team faced off against the Vampt Oilers for the league championship. The Oilers mustered a great effort, taking an early lead.
However Appleby demonstrated their depth, fought back late and held on for an 8-5 victory. Coach Norm Klein of the Sharks states the title is a form of vindication.
“The Appleby Sharks have had a fantastic year,” Klein said. “We focused on player skill development with an emphasis on making the game fun and enjoyable for the kids. Coach Tim Derksen and I have coached the Sharks for a number of years and it is interesting to see how the kids have changed from season to season – they are maturing and becoming young leaders and great team-mates.”
After the game Coach Colin Reid of the Vampt Oilers stated it was a good effort.
“Coach Ray and I are extremely proud of all of our players. Our goalie Ben Williams who strapped the pads on for the first time this year, improved every week and our team gelled well to earn a spot in the finals.”
