Prison scraped past Police

It was an explosion of excitement at the Smith Road Oval in the Division 1 T/20 final between Police and Prison.

Cricket supporters came out in their numbers and were not disappointed. Prison walked away as champions but had to fight all the way to the last over to achieve victory.

It all began with Police batting first and getting off to a solid start with Ramon Sealy and Zachary McLaughlin. At the fall of Sealy’s wicket Cayman Islands premier batsman Pearson Best entered and began to take the fight to the Prison bowlers with boundaries flowing in every over. Police scored a fantastic 179 for 7 wickets and their supporters were feeling very confident.

Prison’s captain produced a master stroke by promoting Kervin Ebanks the number eight batsman to the opening position. Ebanks and regular opener Troy David partnership of 73 runs was the foundation for the fun to follow.

Steve Gordon continued his exciting batting but it was the long awaited entrance of Ladel Farquharson that brought the crowds to their feet. Will Ladel add to the 77 sixes he had for the season? Yes he did in grand style hitting four massive sixes and took Prison to the brink of victory.

The fall of Gordon and Farquharson gave Police some hope but captain Bazil and Ryan Ebanks took them home to the double championships.

Cricket association president Courtney Myles and grand master Jimmy Powell were extremely pleased by the standard of cricket displayed and the crowds who attended.

Myles said: “Our country must be proud of the performances of both teams. It is a pity that there must be a winner.

For our association, cricket won today. Thanks to everyone for making this a memorable day for us. It was fitting tribute on this special day. Happy Father’s Day Cayman!”

In the play off for third place Greenies 1 defeated By Rite by 6 runs in a low scoring match.

In Division 2 action, Greenies Too made a clean sweep of the league by defeating Aims Consultants in their final match. Greenies Too won by 7 wickets.
