Rape suspect Jeffrey Barnes gave himself up early Tuesday afternoon to armed police surrounding the apartment he was hiding in.
Police found Barnes in a young woman’s apartment in the Ocean Club condo complex on Shamrock Road in Spotts and arrested him around 1.45pm. The woman was also arrested on suspicion of obstructing police in lawfully executing their duties.
Detective Superintendent Marlon Bodden said Barnes did not put up any resistance. “He was at the Ocean Club complex and, once he realised he was accompanied by armed police officers, then he, without incident, gave himself up.”
The search for Barnes began on Saturday, 29 October, after a 49-year-old woman reported to police that she had been raped by a man in a red Honda Civic who had forced her into the car while she waited for a bus on Shamrock Road in Red Bay.
Police also received a report minutes later on Saturday morning that a man in a red Honda Civic had repeatedly tried to lure an 11-year-old girl into his car. Later that day, they received a call from a relative of Barnes who reported that the suspect had also sexually assaulted a member of his own family.
Detective Superintendent Bodden said since police had released details of the attacks and issued a photo of Barnes Monday, another woman had come forward to say she had also been raped by the suspect last week.
He said that the victim, an adult resident of the Cayman Islands, was currently off island.
“Unfortunately, as a result of our media release [Monday], another female has come forward and reported that she had been raped by this individual. This was an incident that was reported to us today [Tuesday] and had occurred some days earlier,” he said.
Police had requested the public’s help on Monday in tracking down Barnes, taking the unusual step of releasing his name and photograph. “I want to thank the public for assisting us in being able to take this dangerous individual off the streets and into police custody,” Mr Bodden said at a press briefing to announce Barnes’ arrest Tuesday.
Mr. Bodden did not specify what information led to the arrest.
Before Saturday’s rape, police had already issued an arrest warrant for Barnes in relation to an assault occasioning actual bodily harm that had occurred a few months ago, police said.
This story has been updated since its original posting to add more details regarding the arrest.

Happy, but not Happy …
We have two women still missing for this year and no one knows where they are at!
One down, hopefully more to follow.
I have a feeling his capture was facilitated with the aid of conscientious people.
Thank You.
If not, he’s behind bars one way or another.
Unfortunately, as a result of our media release Monday, another female has come forward and reported that she had been raped by this individual. This was an incident that was reported to us today Tuesday and had occurred some days earlier, he said.
This statement by Supt. Marlon Bodden makes absolutely no sense…what is he saying here ?
That it is unfortunate that because of the RCIPS releasing Barnes photo to the public, they now know of another rape that he has committed ? That is the way the statement reads.
Or is it unfortunate that Barnes has raped another woman who did not report it to the police until she had positive ID of who raped her ?
Or is it unfortunate that a rape was committed that was not immediately reported to the police ?
Or is it unfortunate that another woman was raped by this serial rapists ?
I consider it ‘fortunate’ on all counts, that because his photo was released another victim of his has identified herself and that he will face another charge that should allow a judge to lock him away for the rest of his miserable, worthless life.
I’m hoping that what Supt. Bodden actually did say has been misqouted in the press in the way he might have said it and what he might actually have meant.
The only unfortunate thing about this situation is that Jeffrey Barnes has been allowed to roam the streets of Cayman and that he did not put up a resistance at his arrest…
And give us all a real reason to offer congratulations and thanks to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service…if they had done what they were supposed to do in the event of his resisting arrest…I guess he only has the guts to rape helpless innocent women.
Before Saturday’s rape, police had already issued an arrest warrant for Barnes in relation to an assault occasioning actual bodily harm that had occurred a few months ago, police said
This fact raises another very relevant question…
When was this arrest warrant issued, how long has it been in effect and what attempts had been made to arrest this creep on this warrant ?
The incident relating to this warrant happened months ago…is it safe to assume that the warrant was issued within a reasonable time after ?
If it was, that would mean that, in spite of a warrant out for his arrest, Jeffrey Barnes was allowed to roam the streets of Cayman for months and rape or attempt to rape 3 innocent women just recently, when he should have been in jail.
When will Cayman’s victims get the courage to call for the Commissioner of Police to answer to them, improve the performance of the RCIPS or RESIGN ?
Detective Superintendent Bodden, it was not Unfortunate, that as a result of your media release (photo name) that another Brave Women has come forward to report her rape of this psychopath.
It HELPED identify her assailant and put another nail into his coffin.
You requested the public’s help (most importantly you provided a photograph and name) and you received it!
It was considerate that you Thanked the People for their Help.
Make this a usual form of communication with us and more criminals will be removed, quickly, from our lives.
As far as I am concerned, this piece of scum has had more than 3 strikes! Well done to the RCIPS who captured this cretin – its only a shame he didnt resist arrest just a little bit!
Let’s have the name of the female friend that helped hide this thug.
You’re gonna house and help this dude get away with heinous crimes?
Let’s hope she’s given a proper jailhouse staycation as well.
its a shame that capitol punishment is not legal in the cayman islands.
Congratulations to the Cayman justice system for punishing this guy the first/second however many times before. As a woman living in the Cayman Islands I am delighted to know that someone gets a little over a year in prison for raping someone, it makes me feel unbelievably safe.
Seriously?!?!?!?!? a little over a year? AND he’s a repeat offender? Come on!!
