Grand Cayman’s coffee culture

It feels like Seattle any day of the week here in Grand Cayman – just enter one of our fine coffee shops.

The trend that took the rest of the world by storm years ago has made an impact here on island. Coffee shops have become the ‘in thing’ in Cayman culture, with an array of exotic blends and flavours of coffee, free Wi-Fi, delicious sweets and savoury wraps to entice the taste buds.

Gals and guys from all corners of the globe, from businessmen to women in maternity wear, find their way to the trendy atmosphere of a coffee shop, an entity which offers a social environment for people to meet, network, have a good cup of java and optimistically get out of their pyjamas or the office. It’s an energising, creative and cool environment to catch up and even do business.

It’s fun to watch the colourful parade of locals and expats marching through the glass doors of coffee shops. People you might not otherwise see in the run of a day, week or year may wander through.

It’s also rather alarming to see some of the sizes of behinds heading out the door with afternoon sweets and beverages summing up the total recommended caloric intake for probably two days in a seeming harmless little white paper bag. Reader, beware of calorie-ladened lattes, frappes and sweets that tempt beyond belief and can pack in a cargo-load of calories in one serving.

A simple Google search of caloric information on speciality coffees shows whooping big numbers for many beverages, which makes for a whopping big behind if you are not careful.

Begin to make wise decisions on your coffee choices. I am a traditional coffee gal by nature, a good cup of the house blend with cream suits my tastes.

Eat and drink to your good health and as always, practise moderation.
