Fast pitch softball is officially back on the Cayman sports scene.
The Cayman Islands Softball Association hosted the opening for its 2012 season last Saturday at the Field of Dreams facility in George Town. An awards ceremony and a pair of exhibition matches featuring male and female players were part of the festivities.
Numerous players were honoured including Bradimir Robinson, who is now the reigning two-time home run king. He is one of three brothers currently playing and he won the 2011 championship for two-time defending champions Patriots with his brother Bradley Robinson. Lady winners CNB/APS Security Team Extreme, who feature talents like Breana Welds and Eleanor Berry, were also recognized along with the other five teams.
The friendly matches saw players like Norlan Duarte and Yosvani Ebanks don their Digicel kits and work off some of the offseason rust. A number of sports personalities are involved in the league such as netballer Jahzenia Thomas, flag footballer Michael Carey and drag racer Humberto Rives.
League action continues this Sunday, 18 March. The men’s teams play at the West Bay field next to the Jimmy Powell Cricket Oval from 2:30pm. The ladies play at this Saturday, 17 March, at the Field of Dreams from 8pm.
