Editorial for 04 May: Have fun, be safe at Carnival

If you’re going to downtown this weekend – starting tonight
– prepare to be entertained.

Cayman’s own version of Carnival begins with a street fete
tonight.

Tomorrow sees Cayman Carnival Batabano – a kaleidoscope of
music, dance and pageantry.

Be aware that certain streets will be closed for the show of
all things carnival beginning at 12.30pm, so if you have any business to
conduct downtown, go early.

Each year, Batabano gets bigger and bigger as more bands,
participants, food vendors and entertainers sign on.

Those who go can marvel at the colourful and imaginative
costumes. Those who participate spend a lot of time and money on the outfits to
wow the crowds. Helping to promote Caribbean carnival in Cayman will once again
be the mas band Swanky International, which also brings flare and dazzling
costumes with more than 300 masqueraders.

While the carnival is about having a good time and
celebrating life – the theme this year is All Nations, One Celebration – we do
ask that participants and those on the sidelines watching the festivities take
care when imbibing alcoholic beverages.

Enjoy the festivities, but remember that at some point the
day will end and you will have to drive home.

It’s probably a good bet that members of the Royal Cayman
Islands Police Service will be out in force before, during and after Batabano.

For a full listing of street closures for tonight and
tomorrow, turn to Page 2 of today’s edition of the Caymanian Compass.

To learn more about Swanky and plans for Batabano for the
weekend, turn to today’s The Caymanian Weekender.

Batabano was to officially kick off last Saturday with the
Junior Batabano parade, but it was unfortunately rained out.

A new date should be set for the event to groom upcoming
masqueraders for Cayman Carnival Batabano.

Hopefully the rains will stay away from George Town tomorrow
and Batabano will be a dry success.

For all who attend, have a safe and fun time.
