Hotel staffs push recycling efforts

Visitors to Camana Bay last Saturday would have found flyers urging them to recycle aluminium cans and glass on their windshields as members of staff at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort spread the message of recycling. 

The group of five, who chose recycling as their community initiative as part of a supervisory training programme, said they hoped they were helping people become more aware of the recycling options that were available in the Cayman Islands. 

“This is something we’re going to continue working on, it’s not for today,” said Beto Barrano of the Ritz-Carlton, who was on hand during the afternoon to talk to people at Camana Bay on how they could recycle aluminium and glass, along with his colleagues, Rita Olsen, Kiesha Gregory, Joan Walsh-Simms from the Ritz-Carlton and Thais Rodriguez from the Marriott. 

“This is very important for us all to get working on. Everybody has a part to play,” Ms Gregory said. 

Bring awareness 

The group is working with Dart Realty and the Cayman Islands Department of Environmental Health on their project to make more people aware of the facilities available for recycling locally and to encourage more people and businesses to avail of them. 

They dropped into restaurants and bars along Seven Mile Beach last week to let them know about their initiative and to talk to them about coordinated efforts to recycle the many cans and bottles that the businesses use. “A lot of them wanted to be involved, but just didn’t know how,” Ms Gregory said. “We need to let people know that there are more options available to them.” 

The Camana Bay Recycling Centre is behind the Farmers’ Market Pavilion and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for anyone who wants to drop off bottles or cans.  

Here and there 

At the centre, deposited aluminium cans are collected by the Department of Environmental Health, then baled and shipped off island for recycling, while glass bottles are pulverised by Dart Realty’s industrial glass crusher on the premises and used for building materials locally. 

“Dart Cayman Islands in partnership with JUNK, Rotary Sunrise and the National Trust is now in the final planning stages of an island-wide recycling programme that will see glass and aluminium collection points located around the island for individuals to recycle their bottles and cans. More details will be announced soon,” said Chip Ogilvie, facilities manager for Camana Bay and the Dart Green Team leader. 

“We applaud local businesses like the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and the Marriott Hotel for supporting recycling efforts in Cayman,” he added.
