Adorable puppies and fluffy little kittens. Without homes. They’d give anything to have just one night in a comfy bed in a friendly home.
Even if you’re not ready to commit to full-time pet ownership, find out how you could still make a difference in the lives of the Cayman Islands Humane Society’s waifs and strays at its Roadshow at Camana Bay on Saturday, 22 September, between 2 and 5pm.
As well as being able to adopt a dog or cat, there are shorter term programmes on offer, giving you the chance to test the waters of pet ownership before you dive in head first. How about just a sleep over to get started? Dogs are supplied with an overnight bag with everything you and they will need, toothbrush included. Well, maybe not quite.
Alternatively, you can foster a nursing kitten, puppy and older dogs that have suffered from abuse or injury for a few days or weeks and give them a quiet place to regain their strength.
Want to find out more? You already know where to go and animal shelter volunteers and their charges will be there. You can meet and bond with some of the shelter residents and learn all about their programmes.
Five books for a dollar
If you’re not ready for direct interaction with the animals, you can support in other ways. In fact, on the same day, the humane society is holding a massive second hand book sale in the parking lot at AL Thompson’s. It’s a total bargain for you – five paperback books for just $1 – but proceeds will all be going toward feeding and sheltering these animals. It’s an offer you can’t refuse.
The book sale opens at 9am and closes at 4pm.
