Flag football in Cayman is reaching its climax.
The Digicel Summer League, put on by the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association, stages its finale this weekend while the Dart Women’s League, put on by the Grand Cayman Flag Football Association, heads into its semi-finals.
Squaring off at Ed Bush field in West Bay this Saturday, 29 September, are the Club House Bulldogs and the dms West Bay Hellcats. The match, which starts at 4pm, pits the two best teams in men’s flag football as Club House were regular season winners at 9-3 while the Hellcats were second at 8-4. For the record, dms were given a fourth defeat after the controversial match against the Cayman Power Sports and Marine Hurricanes was ruled a loss.
Both sides are coming off narrow victories in their opening round playoff games last Saturday. The Bulldogs edged the Maples Packers 9-6 while the six-time champion Hellcats clipped the Burger King Panthers 7-6.
Saturday’s final pits, statistically, the two best teams. The Bulldogs and Hellcats ranked first and second, respectively, on offence and defence. Behind talents like Chris Spigner, Dave Velez and Luigi Moxam, Club House scored a league-best 199 points while dms, featuring Jacob ‘Frecko’ Ebanks, Perry Levy and Kevin Maxwell, had 190pts. Club House, with Todd Hazlewood and Kevin Zimmer/Josh Parsons, allowed 63pts while dms, behind Phil Brown and Michael Carey, surrendered 87pts.
The ladies play a pair of postseason games at the Camana Bay Sports Field on Friday, 28 September, at 8pm. The focus rests on top seeds Androgroup Killa-Panthers and the Hammerheads Lady Sharks, who enjoyed first-round byes.
Both sides have star talent like Christina Hefner and Cassandra Bodden of Androgroup and Hong Nguyen and Lilia Conolly of the Lady Sharks. The league finals are slated for next Friday, 5 October, at 7pm.
