Cuban migrants spotted off East End

Cayman Islands immigration officers intercepted a boat carrying 25 Cuban migrants that was near the shore in Gun Bay, East End, Thursday morning.

Officials confirm there were 25 people on board, including 22 males and three females, who expressed an intention to travel to Swan Island off the coast of Honduras.

Immigration Enforcement officers at the scene were assisted by the Police Marine Unit and other Royal Cayman Islands Police officers. Local authorities inspected the vessel and its passengers, immigration officers said.

The migrant vessel was deemed seaworthy and the well-being of its passengers confirmed, so officers allowed them to continue their journey.

Cayman officials monitored the migrants until they departed at about 12:10pm Thursday, on their own power and under Marine Unit escort.
