Deloitte budget for more props

The Deloitte Devil Rays will be looking to separate from the pack.

Deloitte started the year atop the Cayman Islands Ball Hockey Association 2012-2013 national league. The association’s 12th season sees matches at Kings Sports Centre.

The 6-4-2 Devil Rays compete on Thursday, 24 January, at 8pm against 4-6-2 team Lone Star. Behind top scorer Leo Kassam (league-high eight goals and 14 points) and skilled passer Rob Rintoul (competition-best eight assists), Deloitte has posted 31 goals. Lone Star have struggled defensively, allowing a league-high 47 goals this season.

Thursday’s other contest pits the 6-4-2 Barracudas against the 6-5-1 Sharks at 9pm. Ben Booker, Dan Allard and Darryl Hather have all chipped in for the Barracudas with five points apiece. The Sharks are led by Claude Plamondon, who has eight goals and 13 points.

Ball hockey matches take place every Thursday, with the regular season ending on 11 April. The playoffs start on 18 April.

Interestingly, Deloitte has a habit of producing top skaters. In addition to the Devil Rays, Deloitte has a Sharks squad that is the the toast of local roller hockey. The Deloitte Sharks emerged national champions for the first time last year at Kings, sweeping the Cayman Hot Sauce Flames in the Cherry Cup finals.

A constant on both teams is Rintoul, a Deloitte manager, who was the top scorer for the Sharks. He had help from the likes of Plamondon, goalie Scott Hughes and Wayne Griffith.

The Sharks will start their title defence at Kings on 29 January in the 2013 winter season opener against the Burger King Gamebirds.
