Local hockey will seek heroes of its own this week.
After the Heroes Day holiday, skaters will storm Kings Sports Centre for ball and roller hockey action. Up first is the return of the national inline league on Tuesday, 29 January.
The Mepco High Rollers battle the Cayman Hot Sauce Flames at 8pm while the Deloitte Sharks challenge the Burger King Gamebirds at 9pm. Deloitte emerged national champions for the first time last year, sweeping the Flames in the Cherry Cup finals.
Rob Rintoul, a Deloitte manager, was the Sharks’ top scorer with help from the likes of Plamondon, goalie Scott Hughes and Wayne Griffith. The Flames featured young prodigies like Jean-Louis Beaudet and Jagger Hope.
On the ball hockey side of things, action resumes on Thursday, 31 January. At 8pm, the 6-4-2 Deloitte Devil Rays face the 6-4-2 Barracudas in a tussle for first place while 4-6-2 team Lone Star battle 6-5-1 Sharks at 9pm.
The Devil Rays feature top scorer Leo Kassam (league-high eight goals and 14 points) and Rintoul, a skilled passer with a competition-best eight assists. Ben Booker, Dan Allard and Darryl Hather have all chipped in for the Barracudas with five points apiece.
Lone Star have struggled defensively, allowing a league-high 47 goals this season. The Sharks are led by Claude Plamondon, who has eight goals and 13 points.
