Victim’s nose was broken in incident
Charges of robbery and causing grievous bodily harm were transmitted to Grand Court on Tuesday against Austin Lloyd Jackson and Justin Alvin Ebanks, both 19.
Crown Counsel Candia James said the charges arose from an incident that occurred on 23 February in the vicinity of a restaurant on Lawrence Boulevard, off West Bay Road in Grand Cayman. She told Chief Magistrate Nova Hall that the victim was approached by two males, who called him a derogatory name and asked, “What you got in your pockets?”
When the victim resisted as they searched him, they started beating him and he fell to the ground, where he was kicked in the head and face.
His BlackBerry cell phone, valued at $399, was taken from him, along with a chain valued at $10, Ms James reported.
The defendants were said to have been identified from a photo spread. There was also a witness to the incident, she indicated. The Crown did not oppose bail applications by defence attorneys, noting that neither young man had previous convictions.
The magistrate noted, however, that Jackson was due to be sentenced in a few days on a drug-related charge. She therefore remanded him in custody until that date.
Ebanks was granted bail with conditions that included a curfew, staying out of liquor-licensed premises and not having any contact with the victim or witness. Both defendants are scheduled to appear in Grand Court on Friday, 8 March.
