The Gamecocks are flying high in local hockey.
Heading into this week, the squad is atop the national inline hockey league at Kings Sports Centre. Prior to last Tuesday’s match against the 1-3-2 Cayman Hot Sauce Flames, the Gamecocks were 6-0 in first place.
Eric Mildenberger leads the Gamecocks with a league-high 13 points. Teammate Curtis Appleyard has eight points. Mike Bowden is the league’s top passer with eight assists for the Flames.
The Gamecocks are in action this Tuesday, 26 March, at Kings. At 9pm, the side faces the 0-4-2 Mepco High Rollers, after the 3-2-1 Deloitte Sharks battle the Flames at 8pm. Deloitte, the reigning champions, are led by Claude Plamondon with a team-high 11 points.
The inline hockey league is one of four competitions currently taking place at Kings. Season 12 of the national ball hockey league, put on by the Cayman Islands Ball Hockey Association, has two weeks left in its regular season with a bye week in effect for Easter. Storming the court are the Deloitte Devil Rays, Barracudas, Sharks and team Lone Star.
On the youth side, the national youth roller hockey league is also off for the Easter holidays. As Kings assistant director André Morgan states, the Saturday competition is building to a crescendo.
“We are now at eight games into the hockey season with six games left before playoffs,” Morgan said. “Even though some games we see teams having big wins against their opponents, this doesn’t mean the competition isn’t fierce.”
There is also a 15 and under league, being sponsored by Appleby, that takes place on Thursdays. Among the competing teams are the Appleby Sharks, led by Tynan Klein, and Jagger Hope’s Vampt Oilers. The competition is on a two-week break for Easter.
