Designer launches the ‘Cayman-kini’

Inspired by a visit to Cayman some 10 years ago, a Californian based swimwear designer, Monica Wise, has created the “Cayman-kini”, a bikini, which the designers said captures Cayman’s culture and charm.

Monica Wise is the designer and creative director behind L*Space Swimwear, an award-winning swimwear brand, which is sold in Cayman at swimwear boutique Sand Angels in Camana Bay. The Cayman-kini will form part of the L*Space Swimwear’s 2014 collection, and will be showcased during July’s fashion swimwear shows.

The designer, along with her team and famed photographer Nicolaas De Bruin, were in Grand Cayman last week to photograph the L*Space 2014 Swimwear Collection at various beauty spots across the island. In addition, Monica also held a trunk show at Sand Angels, where guests had an opportunity to meet the designer and view her latest designs.

Monica said the Cayman-kini has been designed specifically to reflect the beauty of Cayman. A reversible design, one side is powder blue representing Cayman’s sparkling Caribbean Sea, while the other is white, illustrating Cayman’s powder white sand.

“I fell in love with Cayman, its island charm, the friendly people and the beautiful scenery,” Monica says. “I have always wanted to return for a shoot here, and I want my customers to be able to experience the Caribbean culture through the campaign photos and video. I hope to capture the colours, the island-style cottages, the beauty of Seven Mile Beach and Cayman’s stunning natural scenery and island culture.”

L*Space has become established as the swimwear brand of choice amongst celebrities and fashionistas worldwide, thanks to its fashion forward design and easy-to-wear mix and match pieces. The swimwear brand is well known for its “fringe” designs, “ruffled” suits and precise “laser” cuts. Famous faces who have worn L*Space includes Lauren Conrad, Cameron Diaz, Gwen Stefani and Rihanna.

“It has been a dream of mine to take my swimwear on location when shooting a campaign,” Monica says. “When I think about a woman wearing a bikini, the first thing that comes to mind is white sand and crystal clear-blue water. It’s idyllic.

“The Cayman Islands is the location of my dreams and I’m so excited to shoot my campaign about a dream location. Our campaign this year is about travel, living a care-free life, and taking the opportunity to go anywhere, whenever you feel. I think the Cayman Islands as a backdrop for this story is perfect.”

The Cayman-kini will form part of the L*Space Swimwear’s 2014 collection, and will be showcased during July’s fashion swim wear shows.
