Prisoners on the run: Who are they?

Murderer Steve Manderson is a serial escape artist who has broken out of prison on at least five previous occasions.

The last time he escaped was in 2005, when he was on the run for five months. He was convicted along with George Roper in the mid-1990s for the killing of a prison guard at Her Majesty’s Prison at Northward. At the time, he was serving time for another matter.

In the Cayman Islands, a life sentence means life in prison, and under existing law, Manderson, 44, has no prospect of ever being released without direct intervention from the governor.

He previously escaped from prison in 1996, 1999 and 2002. He also escaped from the George Town police station in 2000.

Prison officials described him as Caymanian, 5-foot 9-inches tall, of slim build and of a light brown complexion with low-cut dark brown hair.

Marcus Manderson

Marcus Manderson, Steve’s 25-year-old son, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in April for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

He was caught by police with a modified flare gun in Windsor Park in February 2012. He had run away from the officers and thrown the weapon over a fence when they tried to question him.

DNA evidence linked the gun to Manderson, and a firearms expert testified that the modified weapon was capable of killing someone.

He is Caymanian, 5-feet 10-inches tall, of slim build and of a dark brown complexion.

He has medium-length hair, with dreadlocks.

Chadwick Dale

Chadwick Dale is serving a six-year sentence for violent offences, including stabbing a woman with a screwdriver during a beach robbery.

The 22-year-old Jamaican national was sentenced less than a month ago for two separate attacks.

During the beach robbery, the court heard, he “gratuitously” stabbed his victim twice in the stomach area, telling her “you dead now, gal”, after she had handed over $40 cash.

At the time, he was already on bail for repeatedly chopping a man with a machete, leaving him with wounds to his shoulder, foot and head, during a fight in September 2012.

He was sentenced in late July to three-and-a-half years in prison for the robbery and two-and-a-half years for the machete attack.

He is described as 5-feet 7-inches tall, of slim build and of a dark brown complexion with low-cut brown hair.
