A rookie club got off to a good start in local hockey.
The ITS Solar Bears defeated reigning national champions the Cayman Hot Sauce Flames, 9-5, last Tuesday. The match was part of the season opener for the adult spring 2014 inline hockey league at Kings Sports Center. While new in name, the Bears featured a number of established local players. Goals came from Brad De Schiffert, Jason Dimitri, Rich Hastings, Pete Holowchuk and Eric Mildenberger. The Flames countered with goals from Chris Anton, Andrew Bowden, Jagger Hope, Rob Seward and Jason Windsor.
Cayman Hot Sauce, which claimed last season’s Cherry Cup by sweeping 2012 champs the Deloitte Sharks, will look to rebound this Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. against the Mepco High Rollers. Mepco lost its opener as the Sharks prevailed, 8-5. Jeff Danter, James Osborne and Scott Somerville nabbed goals in a losing effort. Deloitte enjoyed scores from Matt Lawson, Dan Etherington, Wayne Griffith, Claude Plamondon and Wes Tenneson. The Sharks are also in action on Tuesday, playing the Bears at 8 p.m.
The Flames will hope to rejuvenate its juggernaut offense featuring Evan Ellbogen. The Montreal native won the scoring title with 41 goals as the Flames were a league-best 9-2-1.
