Governor Kilpatrick honored as top lady on the court

Governor Helen Kilpatrick has a new title – patron of Cayman netball.

The governor was the recipient of a number of tributes Saturday as part of the Cayman Islands Netball Association’s Honoring Women Month ceremony. Association president Lucille Seymour said it was a momentous occasion for the sport.

“This is historic for sports and, in particular, netball,” Seymour said. “Our global vision of netball with local flare can only improve with such a partnership. The health of our nation socially, psychologically and physically is an important element for participating in netball. Added to that is its ability to hone the skills of leadership and great decision-making skills.

“Netball, as an agent of change in the social agenda of our nation, must lead in assisting the country in preparing citizens, girls and women in particular.”

There was a parade of local youth teams at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts, followed by a dance routine by George Town Primary School students and exhibition games featuring the Under-9 and Under-12 age groups. The highlight was a contest between All Stars netball club and the national women’s team headed to Calgary for the 2014 American Federation of Netball Associations championship.

The August tournament is a qualifier for the 2015 World Netball Championships in Australia, and the top teams earn automatic berths.

As well as Governor Kilpatrick, the event attracted other dignitaries, including Cayman’s Minister of Sports Osbourne Bodden.
