The George Town landfill fire is out, but firefighters continue to monitor the site every two hours, according to the Fire Service Department.
“Although all the fire equipment is back at the station, we are still checking the fire site on a regular basis,” said Fire Chief Roy Grant.
The smoldering deep-seated fire, which was discovered Saturday morning, was extinguished at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday, he said.
“The situation is under control and there is no more smoke coming up from the landfill,” Mr. Grant said.
He also said fire officers would monitor the site, along with staff from the Department of Environmental Health, which runs the dump, on a regular basis.
“What we are really trying to do is deal with it from an early stage to avoid the fire reoccurring and getting out of control. Then we would have a bigger issue on our hands,” Mr. Grant said.
