Police release Jamaican fishermen

Cayman Brac immigration and police authorities escorted two Jamaican nationals out of Cayman waters Tuesday, one day after detaining them.

The fishermen, who were found to be carrying just under $10,000 in cash on them, arrived at a port in Cayman Brac in a 28-foot-canoe, according to police.

They told police they were experiencing problems at sea and were heading to Jamaica.

As the two men were carrying no identification papers, police said they were initially detained Monday so that Brac authorities could determine their identities. “The immigration and police authorities consulted with the Jamaican authorities and determined that no offenses were disclosed, as well as the fact that they were not known to be wanted in Jamaica for any crimes,” said Chief Inspector Raymond Christian.

After police identified the men, they were released on the same day at 8:20 p.m., but the pair elected to remain in custody overnight.
