Breakthrough in Yates murder investigation

Justin Manderson arrested after morning raid in West Bay

A 22-year-old West Bay man, Justin Manderson, was arrested Thursday morning in connection with the shooting death of Victor Oliver Yates on Jan. 3. 

Detectives backed by armed units and K9 patrols searched homes in West Bay in a pre-dawn operation in the district. 

Police confirmed they had arrested a 22-year-old male, whom they did not name. He was being held in the cells at the George Town Police Station.  

Mr. Yates, also 22, worked at Cayman Spirits Company. He was shot and killed in the early hours of Jan. 3 close to the Super C restaurant in West Bay. 

Around 20 witnesses were said to be present when the shooting took place. 

Manderson is expected to appear in court on Friday. 

Speaking at a West Bay police community meeting on Wednesday, Commissioner David Baines said he believed police were on the brink of a breakthrough. 

“We know who the murderers are. We are working day in, day out, to bring charges,” he told residents at the meeting,
