Cayman Islands Flag Football: Hellcats end Panthers’ winning streak

Cayman Islands flag football teams faced off last Saturday in Week 10 of the CIFFA Premier League. Here is a recap:

Burger King Panthers vs. Kensington Hellcats

The two veteran teams had met twice before, with the Panthers coming out on top both times. Bearing that in mind, the Hellcats made the most of their time on the field with a number of key interceptions on defense, most notably by Terrick Myles whose interception resulted in a touchdown.

The Panthers’ offense made multiple efforts to score but surrendered the ball after a turnover on downs. Hellcats QB James Stephens found Perry Levy twice for two touchdowns before running across the goal line himself. The Panthers had a late game drive that resulted in a touchdown when Brendon Malice found Taj Haye downfield. The Hellcats won, 20-6, ending the Panthers’ once-perfect season.

Red Stripe Wolverines vs. Greenhouse Lynx

This match between two of the women’s league’s strongest teams featured defensive plays in the first half by Lynx’s Latoya Cover. However, the efforts of Wolverines’ Tajae Grey, Martina Bodden and Agueda Blake kept them from taking an early lead. Ultimately, Cover scored for the Lynx, and Yasmin James made the extra point. Then, Wolverines’ quarterback Antoinette Vernon-Hamilton scored a touchdown, and Nekita Saintvil made the one-point conversion to tie the game 7-7 and send the match into overtime. Neither team scored again.

HSM Vipers vs. Maples Jaguars

For the Vipers, powerhouse Maggie Ebanks, after tackles by Jaguars’ Nikki Ebanks and Kara Rankine, went on to score a touchdown and the one-point conversion. The Jaguars made offensive attempts with passes to Kayla Robinson, but Vipers rusher Cassandra Ebanks sacked the Jaguars’ QB for a loss during the series. Later, Vipers’ Alicia Dixon scored, and then Stephanie Watler came on board as quarterback and found Maggie Ebanks for another touchdown for the Vipers. Watler also had two interceptions. The Vipers won, 26-0.

Tribe Tattoo Lady Sharks vs. Subway Lady Predators

The Lady Sharks took early control of the game with a 30-yard pass to Scimone Chin. Though the Lady Predators held on defensively, the Lady Sharks won, 6-0.

Subway Lady Predators vs. Maples Jaguars

The Jaguars’ Nikki Ebanks interrupted the Lady Predators’ drive with an interception. Rookie quarterback Yolanni Manzanares made short gains by running the ball and passing to Melanie Bush. The ball was turned over before the Jaguars could score. In the second half, Jordyn Williams of the Lady Predators ran for a touchdown, followed by a one-point conversion by Sandy Seymour. The Lady Predators won, 7-0.

Maples vs. Island Heritage Predators

Maples made small gains until quarterback Chris LeBeau ran for a touchdown, followed by a pass to Fabio Gall to bring the underdog team to a 7-0 lead. Again, the Predators, the 2016 champions, sought to advance the ball with notable plays by Kaleb Ebanks and Oliver Parker but were not able to score. Maples’ Gall ran the length of the field and scored. In the second half, the game continued with strong defensive play by Maples, namely by Jonathan Allen, Thomas McField-Brown and Elroy Allen to protect their lead and ultimately win 13-6.

The next round of games in the men’s league are on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 3:30 p.m. at the Ed Bush field.
