Cayman’s quest for a spot in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup begins this weekend against the Dominican Republic.
Cayman will welcome the visiting team to the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on Saturday, 19 Feb., for their group C opening match of the CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, marking the first international game played at home since 2019.
“It means happiness for the players and happiness for the football fans,” Alfredo Whittaker, president of the Cayman Islands Football Association, told the Cayman Compass. “This is a big game for us.”
The match, which was supposed to take place in November last year but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is one that will feature a promising Caymanian squad, according to Whittaker.
“We are proud to have a team that is all born Caymanians,” he said. “I think we have a team that can compete and do wonderful things during this match.”
The last time the local senior women played internationally was in August when they won the 2021 Women’s Festival friendly tournament in Turks and Caicos.
Whittaker said football fans should keep an eye out for several key players from his squad, who will “no doubt contribute for Cayman” during the upcoming match.
“We have Molly Kehoe, who is one of the best strikers,” he said. “We have Shanice Monteith, who brings the most experience, and then we have Kaela Ebanks and a lot of young players who bring determination and passion to do good things.”
The match is slated to start at 3pm.
Nonrefundable tickets are on sale online for $10 each through EventPro.
