A 26-year-old George Town man charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm was among nine people arrested in a joint operation between police and border control officers on Friday.
According to police, the raid took place just after 1pm on Friday at a bar and other establishments near the junction of Shedden Road and Eastern Avenue.
During the operation, the man, who attempted to evade police, was detained and searched, at which time a loaded handgun was found in his possession. He was arrested in relation to the firearm and taken into custody, before subsequently being charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of an unlicensed firearm (ammunition).
Additionally, police recovered what they described as “vegetable matter resembling ganja,” illegal gambling paraphernalia and a significant quantity of cash.
This led to the arrest of eight other people:
- A 44-year-old-man of George Town on suspicion of possession of ganja and possession of ganja with intent to supply.
- A 32-year-old-woman of George Town on suspicion of illegal gambling.
- A 67-year-old-man of George Town on suspicion of illegal gambling.
- A 34-year-old-man of East End on suspicion of possession of ganja.
- A 19-year-old-woman of George Town on suspicion of illegal gambling and operating a common gaming house.
- A 33-year-old-woman of George Town on suspicion of illegal gambling and operating a common gaming house.
- A 22-year-old-woman of George Town on suspicion of illegal gambling and operating a common gaming house.
- A 47-year-old-woman of George Town on suspicion of illegal gambling and operating a common gaming house.
These matters are being investigated by the police, the release stated.
