Deputy Governor Franz Manderson kicked off the Grand Cayman leg of his annual 5K challenge on Sunday morning, calling on the public to continue engaging in regular exercise.
“Regular exercise is essential for a healthy heart. I believe I am alive today because I exercise regularly,” Manderson told the Cayman Compass Sunday at the end of the event.
Last November, Manderson underwent an emergency medical procedure following a micro heart attack. He was admitted to hospital after experiencing chest pains.
Since then, Manderson has been using that personal experience to encourage all in the community, especially men, to take their health seriously and get regular check-ups.
Manderson, speaking with the Compass Sunday, said the 2023 DG5K Challenge Grand Cayman was “a tremendous success with over 1,500 persons registered”.
He thanked everyone who came out to support this year’s beneficiaries – the Red Cross, Loud Silence Voices and United Against Bullying Foundation.
“I also give thanks to our amazing sponsors and the very efficient organising committee. A special thank you to our governor, Her Excellency Jane Owen and her daughter Phoebe for attending the event. I encouraged everyone to get out and exercise regularly,” he added.
The DG 5k challenge is held across all three islands.
The first of the three events was on Sunday, 16 April on Cayman Brac.
The Grand Cayman and Little Cayman events were pushed back due to the scheduled arrival of Governor Owen.
Now that Sunday’s event has been completed in Grand Cayman, all eyes will be on the final 5K on Sunday 28 May in Little Cayman.
