Regional forecasters are monitoring a weak tropical wave a couple of hundred miles off the eastern coast of the Bahamas.

The system currently poses no threat to the Cayman Islands and all forecasts suggest this is unlikely to change.

In an 8am update issued Monday, 22 May, the US-based National Hurricane Center stated that the tropical disturbance was still a wide area of unorganised showers that was slowly drifting towards the US mainland.

“Strong upper-level winds and dry air are expected to prevent development while the system moves generally north-northeastward at 5 to 10 mph over the southwestern Atlantic during the next day or so,” according to the National Hurricane Center.

The system currently has only a 10% chance of further development within the next 48 hours. The seven-day forecast suggests similar chances of development.

This is the first weather system to appear on the NHC’s radar system since it began publishing daily updates on 15 May. However, it is not the first storm system of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, which came by way of a rouge storm in January.

The latest system comes days before the NHC’s announcement of its annual Atlantic hurricane season forecast, which will be released on 25 May during a live press conference.

Given the current system’s low chances of development over the course of the next week, it is doubtful that there will be a named storm before the official 1 June start date of the hurricane season.
