Although the immediate outlook for the Cayman Islands calls for light winds and slight seas for the next few days, local and regional forecasters are monitoring multiple weather systems in the Atlantic Ocean, one of which is a strong tropical wave that is likely to develop into a tropical storm.
None of these systems pose any immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.
According to the US-based National Hurricane Center, a tropical wave is currently generating thunderstorms as it continues to become more organised several hundred miles off the southwest coast of Cabo Verde Islands.
Forecasters say the system has a 90% chance of further development within the next seven days.
“Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for further development, and this system is expected to become a tropical depression around midweek,” warned the NHC.
“Additional strengthening is likely late this week while the system moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 [miles per hour] over the central and western portions of the tropical Atlantic.”
Further north, post-tropical cyclone Katia has been downgraded to a tropical depression. During their last update on Katia, NHC forecasters simply noted that “Katia has come to the end”.
Even further north, post-tropical storm Gert continues to dissipate; much like Katia, it is a fish storm that poses no threat to land.
