Some 375 people packed the Arts and Recreation Centre (ARC) at Camana Bay for the 17th annual Pilates for Pink event, a breast cancer awareness fundraiser in support of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.

Men, women and children sporting pink tank-tops were brought together for a group Pilates workout, featuring body-sculpting exercises combined with a flowing stretch sequence. Attendees also took part in a pre-pink party, plank challenge and a 60-minute Pilates4Pink Power workout. There were also random-draw prizes up for grabs.

The event is hosted by ENERGY Pilates – the organising body behind Pilates for Pink – which is owned by Colleen Brummer, who is a breast cancer survivor herself. Out of gratitude, Brummer wanted to do something to give back to the community and help people who were going through breast cancer.

“In 2005, we held our first Pilates for Pink with just 20 people, and [I’m] proud the event has grown over the years. My heartfelt appreciation to all those who participated whose enthusiasm and support for Pilates for Pink fuels our mission to make a meaningful impact on those affected, not only by breast cancer, but all cancers,” she said.

“I know what a powerful effect support can be, and getting together, all in one place, to put our bodies to the test, is a great way to show our island we care,” Brummer added.

“It was a sea of shiny, happy, pink people who were there to turn up and show their support for the fight against cancer,” said Jennifer Weber, operations manager of the oncology department at Health City Cayman Islands and avid supporter of breast cancer awareness and the annual event.

“So many women were there as cancer survivors themselves or as supporters of friends and family who had cancer, particularly breast cancer… ,” Weber said.

From admission fees alone, organisers confirmed over $15,000 in funds raised. All money goes directly to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society for patient financial aid.
