Fire officers have left the site of Tuesday’s fire at the George Town landfill fire after completely putting out the blaze and finding no further flare-ups Wednesday morning.

Government Information Services, in a brief statement Wednesday morning, said the Cayman Islands Fire Service reported that the fire, which started around 8pm Tuesday, was fully extinguished.

A Fire Service crew remained at the scene throughout the night Tuesday to monitor the situation, the statement said.

“Further assessment confirmed that that there is no sign of smoke or fire and the crew have been stood down,” the GIS statement said.

The high winds experienced Tuesday night fanned the flames; however, fire officers were able to bring the fire under control.

Opposition MP Joey Hew, in whose George Town North constituency the landfill sits, speaking with the Cayman Compass following the latest fire, said the incident is “a stark reminder” of how quickly the landfill can become a major hazard if it is not managed properly.

“It also demonstrates the urgency of the waste-to-energy facility and the dangers of an over-capacity landfill site,” he added.

Government is still in negotiations with the Dart-led consortium to sign the financial close for the long-awaited waste-to-energy plant – known as ReGen – which is supposed to help with the limitations of the existing landfill.
