Two under-13 football teams representing Cayman International School exceeded expectations when they competed at the KPMG Football Fest tournament in the Bahamas over the weekend.
Cayman sent a boys and girls team, each playing five games against schools from BVI, Jamaica, Barbados and host Bahamas.
The boys delivered an outstanding performance, winning all their games while conceding no goals. The girls’ team also went undefeated en route to the finals where they narrowly lost in a penalty shootout.
“Both teams were younger than what we normally send, so the expectation for them was lower but they played a more clean-oriented game,” Jared Joiner, Athletic Director of CIS told the Compass.
“They played with passion; they were motivated right up until the finals,” he said.
For the girls’ team, it was a flawless performance throughout the event, up until the finals against the Bahamas, where they were edged on penalties after a valiant effort through normal time.

Though they finished as runners-up, they had reason to celebrate, considering it was their first time ever competing at the regional event.
“They proved everyone wrong because they performed well beyond everyone’s expectations,” Joiner said.
The boys’ team was coached by Tafari Khan and Nicholas Yale and the girls were led by Jayme Farrell and Angela Short.
Joiner said he was impressed by what the teams were able to accomplish.
“It’s good for us,” he said. “We maximized the opportunity that we have on island and was able to take our kids and compete against other schools in the region; the results, are wins and trophies and last year our girls won, and our boys came second, it’s just been great.”
