A man on a boat with 10 Cubans on board fleeing the country asked to be taken to Cayman after the vessel was spotted by a Port Authority craft and intercepted by the Coast Guard.
A spokeswoman said that on 11 Dec., the Port Authority vessel monitored the boat until the Coast Guard arrived and took on board one of the 10 men who said he no longer wished to continue the journey.
He was turned over to Customs and Border Control officials and taken to the service’s detention centre in George Town.
The Coast Guard shadowed the vessel, which was headed in a westerly direction, until it vanished from sight.
