Two elderly US tourists have died in the space of four days after they got into difficulties on snorkelling trips.

A 68-year-old man died after a trip to Coral Gardens, North Sound, on Monday, 11 Aug., after the boat he was snorkelling from sent out a mayday.

A Coast Guard vessel took the man on board and performed CPR as their vessel returned to shore, where paramedics took over.

The man, who has not been identified, was rushed to hospital but later pronounced dead by doctors.

Michael Gallagher, 71, died after he went snorkelling in the water off North Church Street, near the intersection with Eastern Avenue on Friday, 8 Aug.

Friends raised the alarm after he disappeared from view. Gallagher was found unconscious in the water and brought to shore.

Emergency services attended the scene and Gallagher was rushed to hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

Two other elderly US tourists also died in separate water incidents in February. A 73-year-old woman died after she got into difficulties while snorkelling on 11 Feb. A 72-year-old man died on 23 Feb. after getting into distress while swimming off Seven Mile Beach.
