Police have warned the public not to let down their guard after a good samaritan was robbed of a gold chain when he tried to help a man who said his car had a flat tyre.

The man was robbed after he left a gym and entered the parking lot at Harbour Walk in Red Bay – one of two carpark robberies in the space of a few hours.

He was approached by a man who asked for help with changing a tyre and followed him to a quiet area of the car park where he was assaulted and robbed.

The victim fled after a second man, who appeared to be an accomplice, approached the scene.

Superintendent Adrian Seales, in charge of community policing, said, “We are asking the public to remain vigilant, especially when walking alone late at night.

“If a stranger asks for assistance in a secluded area, please exercise extreme caution and consider staying in well-lit, populated zones.”

The victim, who suffered only minor injuries and did not require immediate treatment, was attacked just before 10pm on Friday, 27 March.

The incident came about after two men, one of whom appeared to be armed with a handgun, carried out a daylight robbery on a man in the parking lot of the Cayman National Bank building in Elgin Avenue’s George Town.

Police said the pair approached the man and stole a quantity of cash and fled in a vehicle.

No shots were fired and no one was injured.

Police traced the vehicle and arrested one man, but two others escaped on foot.

They said the man detained remained in police custody.

Police said investigations into both incidents continued and appealed for anyone with information that could assist the inquiries to contact them.

Anonymous tip-offs can be left at the police tip line on 949-7777, through the police website or at the Cayman Crime Stoppers website or mobile app.
