Two men who were arrested in late May have been formally charged with the importation of cocaine, other drugs and firearm offences,
Coast Guard officers, backed by a police helicopter, intercepted a vessel with the two men off the southern coast of Grand Cayman, and found 10 kilograms of cocaine, 550 pounds of ganga and a semi-automatic Sig Sauer handgun and ammunition on board.
ketamine and MDMA, known as ecstasy, weighing less than one kilogram, were also recovered.
Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton said the incident “demonstrates the impact of a major investment in law enforcement capabilities to disrupt the flow of illegal drugs, firearms and ammunition through our islands.
“The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service continues to work closely with our local and international law enforcement partners to maintain a zero-tolerance approach to drug and firearms trafficking and will continue to apply all necessary resources to combat this criminal activity.”
The two men, aged 42 and 22, first appeared in court on Tuesday, 14 July and were remanded in custody until 29 July.
The seizure was said to have happened just after midnight on Friday, 29 May after the police helicopter crew alerted the Coast Guard, which stopped the vessel.
The two-man crew were arrested and the cargo secured and later handed over to police for further investigation.
