LC gets new patrol car

Police Officers in Little Cayman received a welcome addition to their resources on 8 June with the arrival of a new patrol vehicle, a Mitsubishi Outlander (4×4).

For the past two-and-a-half months, officers had used a rental vehicle for police patrols. This was a necessary, but less-than-ideal scenario.

RCIP media liaison Maria Mc Lean spoke with Little Cayman Police Constable Simon Bennett, according to an RCIP press release.

‘The new vehicle has had an amazing effect on reducing the amount of speeding vehicles. Its appearance is very high profile so road-users can now see a visible police presence on the roads of Little Cayman. So far motorists appear to have reacted accordingly and slowed down,’ he said.

The new patrol car will be fitted with a radar gun, which will increase officers’ ability to detect and prosecute speeding motorists.

Once this is in place Little Cayman police will be equipped to deal with all manner of planned policing operations and road-traffic accidents.

Sgt Adrian Barnett from the RCIP traffic department will visit Little Cayman on Wednesday to train officers in the use of the Intoxilyzer breath-testing machine. The Intoxilyzer is used to process drivers who are suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

The current method of dealing with suspected drink drivers is time consuming and expensive. Police anticipate the new Intoxilyzer equipment will be a more cost-effective method of prosecuting drivers who disregard Cayman’s drink-driving laws.
