Many tourists think of enjoying a swim, a leisurely snorkel or a wonderful dive experience in the pristine waters surrounding the Cayman Islands when they think of vacationing here.
But an article posted on the About website in the Go Caribbean Travel section contains ‘A Landlubber’s Mini-Guide to Grand Cayman’ outlining some of the land-based activities tourists can enjoy while vacationing here.
The article, obviously posted pre-Hurricane Ivan, does need a little updating, but most of it remains relevant to today also.
Included the list of places to visit are shopping in George Town, the GPO for its mass of private mailboxes, the Elizabethan Square and clock tower in George Town. Also in George Town visitors are encouraged to visit Tortuga Rum Company, ‘Their rum cakes can’t be beat and they’re great to take home to friends’ it says.
In West Bay, taking a picture of The Old Homestead and a trip to Hell are recommended, along with, of course, the Turtle Farm.
Also noted is the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park and the Pirates Caves in Bodden Town.
Some of the attractions still not up and running since Ivan but mentioned in the pre-Ivan article include the Cayman Islands National Museum, The Mastic Reserve and Trail and Pedro St. James Historic site.
A visit on a submarine or semi-sub is also recommended.
‘Whether you’re in the water or on the land, Grand Cayman is a great destination. If possible, include it in your itinerary the next time you visit the Caribbean,’ advises the site.
In the ‘Choose an Island to Visit’ section Cayman does well, being singled out in three out of five categories. It is one of five destinations mentioned under Beaches (for Seven Mile Beach); and Little Cayman stands out in the ‘Solitude’ section as the only island along with Turks & Caicos; for ‘Family Fun’ Grand Cayman is mentioned as one of four destinations.
