Sharks secure revenge

About four months ago the Sharks were heartbroken.

The side lost to the BDO Pirates in the Cayman Islands Ball Hockey League final. However the squad recently made amends for the overtime defeat at the Logic arena of Kings Sports Centre. The Sharks would down the Pirates 4-2 for the Spring 2011 championship.

Sharks assistant captain Tim Courtis states the title would be sweet revenge for the club.

“We were up 2-0 at the start and we had it in hand,” Courtis said. “Mind you it was close because BDO have a very good team. They are very worthy opponents with Randy Cannon in net.

“There is a certain satisfaction now that we got the title. That loss last time was something that hurt for awhile. To get in the finals in the first year and win it the second time around is great.”

Interestingly the Sharks claimed this season’s trophy without two key players. Leading scorer Scott Gossen and starting goalie Shawn Lunt were off island for various reasons. In turn a number of role players would step up including Ian Lambert and Robert Mahadeo.

Courtis states the key was having Andrew Finlason, a goalie for bottom club the Lone Star Barracudas, in net.

“Scott was off-island in Miami getting in touch with his feminine side and Shawn was gone too. It was nice to see other people step up. Andy in particular really did well as our backstop.

“Ian Lambert, who people may know as being very decent in football, deserves major props for stepping up in these hockey playoffs. We got key goals from him.”

Ultimately Sharks captain Tim Woolaver states the victory was a team effort.

“It was a good team effort by everyone,” Woolaver said. “I’m glad we got to play the Pirates again. Beating them was certainly vindication for us.”
