The number of chickenpox cases among Cubans isolating at the Breakers Civic Centre has increased and the facility is now at capacity, according to Customs and Border Control.
Thirty Cubans are being housed at the civic centre.
Earlier this month, CBC stated that nine Cubans from the main detention centre had been transferred to Breakers after more than one of them had been diagnosed with the virus. Since then, other cases have emerged and more of the detainees have been transferred to the centre to isolate.
There are a total of 20 confirmed chickenpox cases among detained Cubans, the CBC told the Cayman Compass.
Meanwhile, at the Customs and Border Control Detention Centre, a situation officials had described as “tense”, has since been defused, according to officials.
The CBC said Thursday night all was “now calm”.
There were unconfirmed reports that the upset Cubans had agitated against IDC staff and a small fire was started.
The CBC said, upon advice from Public Health, further segregating of the population at the main detention centre was no longer necessary at this stage as the chickenpox virus runs its course there.
“Any migrants showing signs of illness are under the care of Public Health and treatment is being provided as necessary,” the CBC added.
