A strong message has been shouted to the world from New York where Leader of Government Business McKeeva Bush told a press briefing that 35 per cent of Grand Cayman’s 3,388 hotel and condo rooms are open.
This figure is projected to go to 50 per cent in April when some long awaited re-openings will have taken place, according to the Department of Tourism.
The re-openings include Comfort Suites in March and Sunshine Suites by Wyndham in April. Seven Mile Beach Resort is slated for May, while the Grand Cayman Marriott and the Grand Caymanian Resort are to open in June. The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman is projected to open in November.
Mr. Bush addressed 25 of the top US media on Friday in New York for a post-Ivan briefing where he also highlighted the building of the Caribbean’s only Mandarin Oriental hotel in East End.
According to DoT figures, there are 911 licensed rooms in properties in the Cayman Islands for stay-over guests.
The licensed figure for hotel and condo rooms on Grand Cayman is 679. Cayman Brac has 164 licensed rooms while Little Cayman has 68.
By the end of December there had been 536 licensed rooms available in Grand Cayman, showing that 143 rooms have been approved by the Hotels Licensing Board in the past two months.
