The Legislative Assembly’s first meeting of the 2006-2007 session officially came to a close on Thursday, June 1st.
The traditional opening ceremony session took place on April 29th. Governor Stuart Jack inspected a guard of honour outside the Legislative Assembly and later delivered his first Message from the Throne.
The occasion was also marked by the introduction of the budget by Kenneth Jefferson, third Official Member responsible for the Portfolio of Finance and Economics, and delivery of the Government’s policy statement by Leader of Government Business Kurt Tibbetts.
It was the first time the three items had been presented on the same day in anticipation of the fiscal year beginning 1 July, 2006.
The following weeks were taken up by the budget debates related to planned expenditures by the individual Ministries.
The budget had a record spending amount that revealed new plans for education, tourism, health, and a number of new revenue measures including revised stamp duties and certain business-related fees.
The next meeting is scheduled for the last week of July, which will be marked by debate on proposed amendments to the controversial Immigration Law.
