With more than 650 construction workers and contractors employed at the Camana Bay development, Dart Realty (Cayman) Ltd has made health, safety and environment a priority by introducing a set of rules and regulations to safeguard workers.
These procedures were proved to be effective when Phase I of the Cayman International School opened recently with a perfect record of ‘Zero Lost Time Incidents’, said a Dart press release. (A lost time incident is an incident that results in an employee being unable to return to work within the same day).
To celebrate this achievement, Dart Realty held a ceremony at the site to thank all the contractors for their commitment to making it happen. Each company was asked to nominate an individual they felt was a role model for health and safety standards, with reasons for nomination as simple as always remembering to bring a hard hat on site – a small but essential detail.
The employees chosen were then issued with a Certificate of Excellence by the Project Manager of Camana Bay in recognition of their accomplishments.
Another Dart innovation for ensuring safety standards is that every employee and contractor is required to complete a one-hour health and safety training session before entering a construction site. This introduction to basic safety rules includes topics such as site regulations for personal protective equipment and machine operations.
Dart also offers all contractors the opportunity to attend a series of training modules free of charge, with subjects covered ranging from scaffolding safety to excavation and trenches.
‘The courses have been hugely popular,’ said Jennie Pacheco, Dart Realty’s Health Safety & Environment representative. ‘To date, we have had over 600 contractors go through the training.’
The Cayman International School Phase I is the first block at Camana Bay to attain its Certificate of Occupancy – and with a 100 per cent safety record, it has set the standard for future phases to follow, the release said.
Dart Realty (Cayman) Ltd’s Health & Safety procedures are based on OSHA guidelines for the construction industry, customised for use in the Cayman Islands where appropriate.
