A Red Bay Primary School teacher has been suspended by the Cayman Islands Department of Education after an incident involving a student.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Family Support Unit is investigating what a spokesperson referred to as ‘allegations of excessive discipline’ at the school. The Ministry of Education said the investigation related to ‘the teacher’s handling of disciplinary issues.’
It’s believed the incident occurred on Thursday, 8 March.
Ministry officials said the teacher would remain on suspension until the outcome of the police investigation. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
A press release issued late Monday by the Ministry said it was satisfied the Education Department acted appropriately.
It’s unclear whether school parents were notified of the incident, whether the student involved is still attending school, or whether that student is receiving any counselling. Caymanian Compass questions about those issues had not been answered by press time.
